Neck: Neck Lift
What is a Neck Lift?
A neck lift is a facial plastic cosmetic
procedure that specifically addresses the neck and undersurface of
the chin. This is specifically differentiated from a facelift, which
involves the lower two-thirds of the face, as well as the neck and
undersurface of the chin. The neck lift is less involved than a
facelift.
A Turkey Gobbler Deformity
One of the more common problems that
develop in the undersurface of the chin and neck area, with time, is
the so-called “turkey gobbler deformity”. This is when the skin
becomes extremely lax and flaccid. Adipose (fat) collects and
aggregates in the undersurface of the chin region. Also, a thin
muscle layer beneath the chin forms a “cord-like structure” also
known as “platysmal bands”. This deformity is unsightly and can be
nicely addressed with the neck lift.
When to Consider a Neck Lift?
Individuals simply have a bit more fat
deposition in the undersurface of the chin region with laxity of the
skin. Often times only the neck is of concern and individuals simply
want this area treated and not the entire face. This is where a neck
lift can be of benefit.
The Procedure
A small incision is created in the crease
just underneath the chin. There are also very small incisions in and
around the lower portion of the ear lobule just below the ear canal.
The incisions are easily hidden when performed in these areas. A
tumescent technique is infiltrated and injected specifically in and
around the lower neck, upper neck, and undersurface of the chin
regions to be treated. Intravenous anesthesia or general anesthesia
is utilized. Liposuction cannulas meticulously achieve sculpting of
the adipose for removal of redundant and unsightly fat accumulation.
Meticulous tightening of the deep layer of muscle and fascia is
performed so as to restore the youthful and natural character of the
neck and jaw line. A small amount of skin trimming is performed as
needed and the incisions are nicely closed, followed by support
bandage application.
What to Expect
Postoperatively The neck lift is performed
on an outpatient basis and individuals can return home the same
evening. Ice packs are placed in and around the neck, chest, and
face area. The head is kept elevated at night. The bandages are
removed the following morning. A support neck and chin dressing are
worn continuously for approximately five to seven days and every
night for four to six weeks. One can return to normal social
activities in approximately five to seven days. Bruising and
swelling and generally minimal and are resolved after a ten-day
period of time. Full exertional activities are recommended after
approximately two weeks after the procedure.
The Advantages
Essentially, it is important to understand
that the neck lift is not a complete substitute for a facelift. The
neck lift simply addresses the undersurface of the chin and neck
regions and the face is essentially left alone. A facelift
essentially is a very nice rejuvenation of the lower two-thirds of
the face and neck region and the neck lift is simply a lesser
treatment option, but nonetheless achieves a significant overall
improvement. There is less swelling and bruising and less
convalescence than required for a facelift. Men are particularly
suitable for this procedure. Men often times are not as concerned
about the prominent laugh lines and buccolabial fold prominence as
they are about the significant laxity in the neck area. The neck
lift can avoid an in-front-of-the-ear incision that can be
noticeable in men. Women have a behind the ear tragus type incision
that nicely heals without being noticed. The neck lift avoids
incisions around the ear.
