Restylane Injections
The Unique Benefits of Restylane
Restylane is a
recently FDA-approved natural and long-lasting solution for
individuals looking to enhance their youthfulness and remove
unwanted wrinkles. Restylane is one of the first “new frontier” soft
tissue fillers. It is the first FDA approved injectable dermal
filler made of non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic
acid is a natural substance already found in the human body, so it
is safe and completely biodegradable. Overall, it has had a
decade-long track record for being safe and effective and has been
trusted by many physicians in different countries prior to its use
in the United States.
Background
Restylane injections have been
used safely by facial plastic surgeons since 1996. The overall risk
of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reaction is
virtually absent. The most common side effects are temporary redness
or swelling at the injection site. These effects tend to resolve in
a few days. Restylane has been used on millions of patients in
multiple countries over the last several years. The FDA has approved
Restylane for use in treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles
and folds, such as the nasolabial folds.
How Long Does Restylane Last?
Studies have shown
that Restylane will last six months or even longer. Restylane lasts
significantly longer than collagen, which is the traditional
injectable to treat wrinkles and folds. Restylane is typically used
once or twice a year, whereas collagen effects only last six to
twelve weeks.
What is Restylane?
Restylane is a natural
cosmetic filler. It is significantly different than Botox in that
Botox is a drug that blocks the neurotransmission and relaxes the
underlying muscle. Restylane is a natural filler that resolves the
actual wrinkle by providing more dullness to the skin and tissue.
Restylane is different from bovine collagen in that there is no risk
if allergic reaction or disease transmission. Collagen was derived
from animals and requires a pre-treatment allergy test.
Restylane is probably
the most studied hyaluronic acid based filler. The mechanism of
action is that of adding volume to the tissues. First, the Restylane
gel lifts the skin and then the hyaluronic acid attracts and binds
water molecules, which adds more volume to the tissue. The result is
noted immediately after injection.
Best Areas of Treatment
When it comes to
thinning lips and deep wrinkles, Restylane injections are the treatment of
choice. Specific areas that would nicely benefit from Restylane
include the laugh lines or buccolabial folds, thin lips, deep
wrinkles around the mouth and scars. Additionally, crow’s feet,
forehead, and glabellar horizontal creases are nicely treated with
Restylane.
Restylane can be used
in conjunction with Botox and with resurfacing techniques such as
chemical peels. Restylane is revolutionary new filler. It is
minimally noninvasive and is one of the most important facial
rejuvenation treatments since Botox.
